Dr. Gretchen Schwarze of the University of Wisconsin-Madison was quoted in, “A surgery standard under fire,” in the New York Times March 2, 2015. The article examines the 30-day mortality standard and its unintended consequences. “Thirty days is a game-able number,” Dr. Schwarze said. Last fall she led a session about 30-day mortality at a conference sponsored by the American College of Surgeons.
