SVS ONLINE will now feature a session that hones in on the coronavirus pandemic, consisting of nine talks dealing with such issues as acute arterial thromboembolism, decreased vascular surgery emergencies and the management of central venous access.

The special scientific session will be moderated by Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Postgraduate Education Committee chair Vikram Kashyap, MD, and takes place on Saturday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. (CDT).

The slate kicks off with a presentation entitled “Acute arterial thromboembolism in patients with COVID-19 in the New York City area,” to be delivered by Yana Etkin, MD, assistant professor of surgery, the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, New York.

Etkin and colleagues carried out research on the premise that COVID-19 predisposes thromboembolic complications. She will describe the clinical presentation, management and outcomes of acute arterial ischemia and concomitant infection at the epicenter of cases in the United States.

Meanwhile, Thomas Hawken, MD, of Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, will detail how the COVID-19 pandemic drastically changed the healthcare landscape in the Big Easy, which bore one of the highest per capita rates of COVID-19 infections in the United States. Hawken et al found “unanticipated major decreases in vascular surgery emergencies, urgent inbound vascular transfers and institutional emergent surgeries” during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The session also includes a talk from Tristen T. Chun, MD, vascular surgery fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, on the management of central venous access during a healthcare crisis.

The last talk of the novel coronavirus session takes a look at the impact of the pandemic on vascular surgery practice in the U.S. The presentation, being delivered by Nicolas Mouawad, MD, chief of vascular and endovascular surgery in the McLaren Health System-Bay Region in Bay City, Michigan, will report on data gathered in the pandemic practice, anxiety, coping and support survey for vascular surgeons, an anonymous cross-sectional effort that was sponsored by the SVS Wellness Task Force.
