It’s Thursday and the Vascular Annual Meeting is in full swing. Here are some sessions today for you to consider, including the first Presidential Address in a double-header of speeches.
6:30 to 8 a.m. Feed your body and your brain at one of the three industry-sponsored breakfast sessions. Tickets are required and can be obtained at registration. Topics are:
- B1: “Why clinical trial participants need to look like us and how we can improve care for the underserved population living with peripheral arterial disease,” sponsored by Abbott, SDCC, Room 1AB
- B2: “Paclitaxel safety: A view from multiple perspectives,” co-sponsored by Boston Scientific and Medtronic, SDCC, Room 6C
- B3: “Clinical insights in chronic CAD/PAD: Reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events,” sponsored by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., SDCC, Room 6F
6:30 to 8 a.m. Resident, Student program breakfasts. The Resident and Student Outreach Committee offers three breakfast programs, for general surgery residents (SDCC, Room 4), medical students in years one and two for “An introduction to vascular surgery” (SDCC, Room 3) and for med students in years three and four, “How to Succeed as a Vascular Surgery Residency Applicant” (SDCC, Room 2). 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. Watch the 2020 recipient of the SVS Lifetime Achievement Award, Robert B. Smith, MD, accept his award in a speech streamed from his home in Georgia during the Awards Ceremony, SDCC, Room 6AB. Read about Smith’s career and life here.
9:45 to 10:15 a.m. Immediately following the Awards Ceremony and in the same room, Elsie Gyang Ross, MD, will discuss artificial intelligence and vascular surgery. She will present the Roy Greenberg Distinguished Lecture, named for the late Greenberg. Ross will discuss “Oh the places we will go: How artificial intelligence will transform the practice of vascular surgery.”
10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. the Vascular Annual Meeting Exhibit Hall opens! Be sure to reserve time to visit our industry supporters for both the tried-and-true and cutting-edge information and devices. Besides vendors, the Exhibit Hall also hosts coffee breaks, lunch, Vascular Live presentations and more. Remember to participate in the Scavenger Hunt for the chance to win valuable prizes. 10:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. Past President (2019–20) Kim Hodgson, MD, has the spotlight for his Presidential Address in SDCC, Room 6AB. Past President Ronald L. Dalman, MD, (2020-21) will perform the introductions.
1 to 3 p.m. The Vascular Research Initiatives Conference (VRIC), highlighting basic and translational research, kicks off its two afternoons of presentation on Thursday, SDCC, Room 11AB. Thursday’s session includes the presentation of the Alexander W. Clowes Distinguished Lecture by Philip Tsao, PhD. Tsao, of Stanford University, will present the lecture, “Molecular and genetic approaches to understanding abdominal aortic aneurysm disease.”
1:30 to 3 p.m., SDCC, Room 1AB. Vascular surgeons, what’s your value? Find out the clinical and financial impact of vascular surgeons on the healthcare system, plus other topics at the concurrent session, “What is the value of the vascular surgeon?”
1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The first of three postgraduate courses is presented. “Clinical update in the management of aortic dissections” will be held in SDCC, Room 6AB. Tickets are required.
3:30 to 6 p.m. Learn all about outpatient-based facilities during “OBL: Embracing the growth in outpatient vascular care,” SDCC, Room 2. Topics include how to start one, business plans, cases to avoid, appropriateness of use and more. The final 30 minutes will focus on Excellence in Community Service awards.
5 to 6:30 p.m. Enjoy the company of your colleagues at the Opening Reception and Interactive Poster Session in Exhibit Hall B. Enjoy beverages, appetizers and fun, plus visit with vendors and poster presenters.
5:30 to 6 p.m. The Excellence in Community Service Awards will be presented during the final 30 minutes of the OBL session, SDCC, Room 2. Recipients of both the 2020 and 2021 awards will be feted.
4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Vascular surgeons regularly encounter occupational hazards, including radiation and ergonomic challenges. Attendees will learn about the risks, be able to review guidelines for radiation reduction, learn to train radiation safely to vascular trainees and about the unique risks to the pregnant vascular surgeon. 6:30 to 8 p.m., MM, Marina D Ballroom. Participate in the Evening Satellite Symposium, “Addressing the risk of neck dilatation in wide necks: The role of ESAR,” sponsored by Medtronic.”
6:30 to 9 p.m. What’s VAM without some fun? Alumni groups from Emory, Stanford and University of Washington have receptions on tap, all at MM in the Leucadia, Loma/Solana and the Coronado rooms, respectively.
7:45 to 9:30 p.m., MM, Balboa/Mission Hills Room. The Women’s Leadership Dinner will address women’s differing career stages, with panelists offering a particular suggestion for success as well as a challenge. The late Robyn Macsata, MD, who died suddenly in May, also will be honored.
