Resident Research Award deadline moved to Feb. 17

2098

The deadline for the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Resident Research Award has been extended to Feb. 17—a knock-on effect of the date shift for the Vascular Annual Meeting (VAM).

The SVS Basic and Translational Research Committee selects one recipient for the Resident Research Award every year. Subsequently, each year the winning study is featured at VAM.

The accolade—open to surgery residents, and vascular surgery residents and fellows enrolled in training programs in the United States or Canada—is designed to provide special recognition of publication-quality, original scientific work unpublished in manuscript form. The recognition also attracts a $5,000 award and a one-year complimentary subscription to the Journal of Vascular Surgery (JVS).

The SVS sees the Resident Research Award as a motivator for early-career physicians to pursue an interest in research that explores the biology of vascular disease and potential translational therapies.

Last year’s winner, Mitri Khoury, MD, a general surgery resident at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, presented research showing that extracellular vesicles enhance deep vein thrombosis (DVT) via receptor-interacting protein kinase-3 (RIPK3). The study raised the suggestion of a causal relationship between necroptosis and hypercoagulative states seen in various diseases, Khoury and colleagues found.

Khoury delivered his findings during the William J. von Liebig Forum—the opening scientific session that took place last year in the unusual, virtual surroundings of the pandemic-enforced SVS ONLINE, the digital replacement for VAM in 2020.

Late last year, the SVS took the decision to move VAM 2021 to August in a bid to increase the likelihood of an in-person event. The meeting was originally scheduled to take place June 2 to 5 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California, but will now run from Aug. 18 to 21.

Applications for a number of SVS as well as SVS Foundation awards, honors and grants are due early in 2021. Information on all awards and scholarships is available at vsweb.org/Awards.
